Intelligent Printer Data Streams (IPDS)IBM's Print Services Facility converts data streams into Intelligent Printer Data StreamsTM for each AFP printer it manages. IPDS is the printer device data stream that contains the information necessary to identify, monitor, and control the functions of the printer. This information includes the characteristics of the printer, its resolution, what resources it has, whether it has sufficient memory, and whether it receives and prints a job. The additional functionality of IPDS mode is its more efficient font format, with character sizes of up to 1" x 1" and text rotation by 180°. IPDS enables a two-way dialog between the printer and the printer driver to create a cooperative print management system. IPDS is device dependent and is unique for each printer.
